Jose Mourinho: I'd have signed Renato Sanches if only United had hired me earlier

Jose Mourinho was keen to sign Bayern Munich's Euro 2016 winner Renato Sanches for Manchester United but was appointed too late, according to the Portuguese coach.

18-year-old midfielder Sanches - named the best young player at the Euro 2016 finals in France - joined Carlo Ancelotti's side from Benfica for a fee of £29.6 million, a total that could rise to around £60m depending on appearances and what he achieves with the German champions.

Sanches was paraded by Bayern on Saturday alongside fellow new signing Mats Hummels, but Mourinho has claimed he could easily have been wearing the red of United rather than Munich if he had been appointed Louis van Gaal's successor earlier.

"I arrived late. I signed in May, we started talking a week before, but completely out of the process. If I had arrived earlier, I’d fight for him," said Mourinho on Sport TV.

"Manchester United watched Renato many times and maybe I did it even more. In so much time at home, I watched many Benfica and Portuguese league games, I got to know the boy better with time.

"He's in a big club, in a league where he’ll certainly be the champion. The club have players of very high level which belong to the structure, a little like Benfica."
