The real reason Meg Ryan's career was ruined

At one time, Meg Ryan took top billing with classics like When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle. But over the years, her presence in Hollywood has become pretty much nonexistent. The real question is this: why has the star's career taken such a turn for the worse? Let's look at a few reasons why Meg Ryan might be losing sleep over her career.

Meg Ryan has starred in countless movies after getting her start as a principle in the popular soap opera As the World Turns. In fact, Ryan has been working in show business for over 30 years. Maybe she just needed a break. In any other profession, she'd be looking at retirement and pricing homes in Florida. Unfortunately, taking time off is dangerous in Hollywood, and tinsel town's cameras don't stop rolling for any actor.

In 2008, it seemed liked Ryan was making a comeback with the a movie called The Women. The remake featured a star-studded cast to act alongside Ryan, including popular performers like Debra Messing, Bette Midler, Jada Pinkett Smith, Annette Bening, and Eva Mendes, to name a few. Sadly, The Women received some not-so-favorable reviews. One critic from Time even called it "…one of the worst movies I've ever seen."

Ouch! That could've hurt not only her pride, but possibly her film portfolio.

During the early 2000s, rumors surfaced that the star allegedly cheated on her then-husband of nine years, Dennis Quaid, with her Proof of Life co-star Russell Crowe. Ryan didn't really address the situation. So she left herself open to bitter tabloid rumors of a messy divorce, and she seemed to be attracting a lot of the wrong type of media attention and getting the "scarlet letter" treatment. A little while later, she did open up in an interview with InStyle in 2008 addressing her feelings after the media backlash and taking a step back from the cameras:

"I didn't have to care about what people thought. I have gotten to do what I guess I secretly wanted to do. I could…be totally under the radar and live my life." Goodbye America's sweetheart, hello edgy attitude.
